Joyfully Embracing Our Mission
St. Clare School Family News | 21 September 2019
Come! Live in the Light!
You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
~ Matthew 5:13-16
Dear St. Clare School Families,
Dear St. Clare School Families,
On Friday, I had the pleasure of spending lunch with Natalie Gebala who graduated last year as part of St. Clare’s Class of 2019 at an event organized by the Admissions Team at Presentation High School. She’s now a freshman, the only one in her class to attend the school. When I asked her what her favorite class was, she said it was Hebrew Scriptures. She said she never realized how interesting bible stories were! When I asked her what would help us get them ready, she responded by asking if we can train students how to open lockers! If only that was all. True to form, Natalie’s resourcefulness led her to find her answer in YouTube. She learned how to do it by watching and then she taught her friends. Natalie was also amazed about the number of mixers: she said it seems like there’s a mixer every week. All in all, she seemed very happy with her high school choice and she exuded confidence that would make her teachers and alma mater proud!
It was a bonus to see three former students (a senior, a sophomore and a freshman). The senior hopes to attend Brown in the fall. Hers was the first class who completed a Capstone Project. Her project was to offer an after-school coding program to middle school girls from underserved communities. This past summer, she volunteered in East San Jose schools and ran programs for them. Her experience in 8th grade has cemented her desire to even the playing field and commit to a life of social justice.
This week and next, we will welcome back more of our alumni as they come to visit and help us out in the classrooms. This Saturday morning, our parent leadership gathered to plan for the work ahead with a look at continuous improvement, sustainability and operational vitality. This amazing group of parent leaders offered their insights on the way forward by considering what we do well, our areas of growth, opportunities available for us and challenges that we need to overcome. This “seed” data will help us plan strategically in order to continue our mission for many more years. I am grateful for their commitment and their care. Very grateful to Cathy Avila-Linn and Shirley Mata (alum parents) for facilitating the day. Thank you to the parent hospitality team and the administrative team for their support.
Each of these experiences and examples affirm that the work we do here (by WE, I mean you, the parents; our faculty and staff; and our learners), is God’s work.
Today, as we celebrate the International Day of Peace, may we recall the many people and communities who work tirelessly to make our world a place where we recognize that we are all connected and we are all one another’s keepers.
I hope to see you at the 9 A.M. Family mass tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 22. I invite you to consider signing yourself and/or your children to join the music ministry at St. Clare Parish under the direction of Chris Wemp. Consider, too, a role in serving as lector or extraordinary minister of communion. Please let me know if you are interested.
Join me for "A Cup with the Principal" in the Faculty Room on Wednesday, Sept. 25 immediately following morning assembly. It's an opportunity to dialog, learn more about each other and ask for clarifications.
May Christ's Peace Live in You.
